Musk’s xAI Launches ‘Grokipedia,’ an AI Encyclopedia Challenging Wikipedia’s Editorial Influence

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, officially introduced Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia powered by AI, making the platform publicly accessible on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

This launch positions Grokipedia as an AI-driven alternative to Wikipedia, a platform Musk has frequently criticized for hosting content that he views as politically influenced. Through Grokipedia, xAI’s stated goal is to provide neutral, fact-based information, establishing a system that relies on verifiable data rather than editorial opinion.

The platform represents xAI’s latest effort to integrate its core Grok AI model into knowledge-based tools. Grokipedia belongs to a new category of AI-driven encyclopedias that use large language models to compile, interpret, and present factual data from various sources.

Early Functionality and Content Hybrid

The early iteration, known as v0.1, currently hosts approximately 885,000 articles. This version functions differently than conversational AI models such as Grok or ChatGPT. Instead of handling full natural language queries, Grokipedia v0.1 currently relies on direct topic searches. Users must input a specific keyword, such as “Poverty,” to receive a list of AI-curated topics on Poverty.

xAI explains that Grokipedia adopts a hybrid approach to content creation. While the article count is significantly smaller than Wikipedia’s collection, Grokipedia combines verified primary data with user-contributed material. This input is then processed by the platform’s AI system to produce synthesized, fact-based entries.

Launch Day Inconsistencies and Future Promises

Grokipedia’s public debut was not entirely seamless. The website briefly went offline after launch but subsequently resumed stable operations.

In response to the feedback, Musk stated that the project remains under development. He promised that future updates would improve both accuracy and reliability, asserting that version 1.0 of the platform is expected to deliver results “ten times better” than the current iteration.

To access the platform, users can visit grokipedia.com and must sign in using their X (formerly Twitter) account. xAI has advised that it has not released any official mobile apps for Android or iOS, and users should avoid third-party apps claiming to represent Grokipedia.
