Geneva, 05 November 2025 — The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations agency for digital technologies, has announced its participation in COP30 in Belém, Brazil, where it will advance the crucial Green Digital Action initiative. The UN agency is urging collective action globally to harness the power of digital technologies to achieve critical sustainability goals.
The Green Digital Action initiative functions as a platform driving collective progress toward a sustainable digital future. The ITU delegation, led by Deputy Secretary-General Tomas Lamanauskas, is tasked with collaborating with governments, private-sector leaders, and civil society to leverage digital transformation as a catalyst for climate solutions and work toward establishing a truly sustainable digital sector.
Addressing the Tech Sector’s Rising Footprint
The focus on digital technologies at COP30 is paramount because the expanding global demand for technology has created an environmental impact that can no longer be overlooked. The energy consumption of the tech sector is rising significantly, driven largely by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and various digital systems. COP30 provides a crucial opportunity to address this growing challenge while simultaneously utilizing technology’s immense potential to drive effective climate solutions across all sectors.
Building upon the momentum gained from COP28 and COP29, the Green Digital Action track at COP30—convened by the ITU alongside a coalition of more than 50 partners—will demonstrate how commitments previously made through the initiative are being converted into measurable data, practical tools, and tangible results.
Key Events and Discussions
The ITU has scheduled several key events during the conference focusing on innovation, metrics, and action:
- 10 November 2025: A High-Level Roundtable titled Leadership and Action Towards a Green Digital Future will take place, organized in partnership with the COP30 Presidency.
- 11 November 2025: Discussions will include Measuring What Matters – Balancing AI Innovation, Impact, and Sustainability, followed by a session on Advancing Green Digital Action Towards a Net-Zero ICT Sector.
- 12 November 2025: The program features Digital Pathways to a Greener Future: Empowering Climate Solutions Through Technology and the AI Innovation Factory.
